MY NEW TOP 10 FOR WEEKEND DEBATE

Here is MY new Top 10 football rankings for Week 2. The Tribune's poll will be out Tuesday.

1. Ubly – Survived major scare at Sandusky. Still the team to beat in the GTE, but may as vulnerable as ever.
2. Reese – I am keeping them  No. 2, but the Rockets are closing in on the Bearcats.
3. Deckerville – An NCTL team in the Top 3? This isn't your normal NCTL squad.
4. Cass City – Have endured a tough schedule to start with games against Sandusky and Brown City.
5. Harbor Beach – The Pirates are 2-0, but the test comes next Friday vs. Reese
6. Vassar – The Vulcans got a HUGE GTW win vs. Lakers.
7. Brown City – Had its chances against Cass City, but couldn't pull it out.
8. Sandusky – Wasted a 21-0 lead against Ubly. Luckily, the Redskins have Mayville next.
9. EPBP – Will be interesting to see how the Lakers respond next week vs. USA.
10. USA – To me, the win over Bay City All Saints is a stunner. Can the Pats make it 2 in a row vs. Lakers?

Next week, Bogan will be covering that USA at Laker game.
Adams will be at Marlette vs. Ubly, where they will dedicate the Ubly football field to Jerry Herp.

Who else has a Top 10?

Thumb Rankings:

1. Ubly - Lucky to get out Redskin land with a "W". Could be the wake-up call the Bearcats needed.

2. Reese - Coach Saylor's off to an impressive start.

3. Deckerville - Absolutely not your average NCTL team, but i think it is fantastic having the Eagles in the NCTL. Is Mayville the next team to enter the NCTL in Football ?

4. Harbor Beach - Coach Schelke is doing a great job bringing the Pirates from a couple disappointing seasons.

5. Cass City - The Combination of Austin Osentoski, Alex Varney & Josh Jensen in the backfield is scary for GTC Opponents.

6. Brown City - The Green Devils will make noise in a tough GTC East. Should be interesting to see how they match-up with North Huron.

7. Sandusky - This may be the best 0-2 team in the Thumb. It won't be a suprise if they knock somebody good off.

8. Vassar - The Vulcans bouinced back after a disappointing loss to Caro.

9. Laker - The Lakers will look to rebound after being shutout by Vassar.

10. North Huron - The Warriors may have the toughest schedule of any class "D" team in the State ( Harbor Beach, Brown City, W. Prescott and Ubly...Ouch )

11. USA - Despite low numbers the Patriots are obviously being very well coached. Nice win against All Saints.

12. Marlette - The Red Raiders may have as many good athletes as anyone. Look for them win some big games.

13. Kingston - The Cardinals ran into a very good GTC East...oops i mean NCTL Powerhouse. They are a much imoproved team.

14. Peck - The Pirates have started the season with two tough losses to good teams ( Brown City and Whittmore Prescott )

15. Mayville - The Wildcats may have one of the best coaches in the Thumb in Mike Campbell. To bad his talent and numbers are pathetic.

16. Bad Axe - The Hatchets are in for another long, long, long year.

I think Reese is better than Ubly.
Those 2 teams are by far best in the area.
Deckerville will lose by 20 to B'cats when they play.

20 points huh? Now that I've seen Ubly(vs USA) and Deckerville(vs Kingston) play I am predicting a dogfight, of course thats a week 8 game I believe so theres still time for team changes. Should be an interesting game no matter what your opinion is!

Ubly has some work to do to be contenders this year. Poor tackleing and big mistakes are turning wins into close games. With tough games like Marlette,Brown City,Harbor Beach and Deckerville comming, there going to have to dig deep to get it done.

Too early in the season to be giving my top ten since most teams are just starting to settle in so how about a top 5 and some notes on some of the others:

1. Reese. There is no doubt in my mind this is the top team in the area this year.

2. Ubly. Story from Thursday night is a lot of turnovers. But to come back from a 21-0 whooping in just one quarter is amazing. They need to clean things up a lot if they expect to win the big games this year.

3. Deckerville. Moving to the NCTL will mean they're top dog for many years to come. The whole GTC football combo for next year means Deckerville won't have to water their schedule down too much so they should stay competitive with the GTC schools.

4. Cass City. Would be nice to see these guys pull out a good year and make the playoffs for the new coach. Were the wins against Sandusky and Brown City really that big? I think so. Those 2 teams will be in the hunt for some hardware this year and Cass City was able to come away with nice wins against each.

5. Vassar. Win against Lakers was big. Will see what they're made of once they play Reese and Cass City.

other notes: Harbor Beach--good start to the year. However, a win against the lowly Hatchets means nothing. I like how North Huron hung with the Pirates for most of the game. But, just like the Bad Axe game, Harbor Beach was expected to win Thursdays game against the Warriors by a lot. So Beach's 2 wins really don't mean that much. Let's see what happens when they play some of the better teams. How badly they lose to Reese this week will tell a lot about how good Harbor Beach really is.

Lakers-I was surprised to see them pull out that win in week one! Vassar is a tough team so no surprise they didn't win last week, but the score kinda surprised me. I would put Lakers 6th if I had a top 10.

Brown City-could they really be contenders this year? I think they're the team to watch.

Sandusky-Did they really put up 21 unanswered on Ubly last week? Maybe if they played a little defense they could've pulled out the win of the year.

North Huron-This team probably has one of the toughest schedules of any area team. I think that schedule is going to wear this team out sooner than later and injuries will take their toll. They had a lot of fight in them against Harbor Beach. Will see if that fighting spirit is still there come week 6 or 7.

USA-promising win against BCAS but with low numbers I think this team peters out as the year goes along, just like North Huron.

Bad Axe-maybe they would be better at 8 man?

1. Reese - Great Coaching = wins, I don’t see anyone out of the top three hanging with the Rockets.
2. Deckerville - The Eagles will not be challenged until week 8 when they play Ubly. This might be the year they end the three year losing streak.
3. Ubly - Hard to pick against the Cats but, after a close scare to Sandusky they drop in the polls in my mind. Not to mention the schedule just gets harder as the season continues.
4. Cass City - Two qualities wins place the Red Hawks at the number 4 slot. With an impressive win against the Skins and a dog fight victory over Brown City I can see Cass City contend for the West.
5. Brown City - Tuff loss to Cass City but should easily rebound against North Huron. After that the Green Devils will begin their conquest of the East.... with the exception of Ubly
6. Vassar - The Vulcan’s could be a surprising dark horse in the Wild West standings.
7. Sandusky - Without a doubt the best 0-2 team in the thumb. Very strong possibility to still make playoffs.
8. Harbor Beach - Arguably the worst 2-0 team in the poll. It’s good that the pirates have rebounded after two disappointing years but, the teams they played where Bad Axe and North Huron.
9. Laker - Not as bad as the record indicates. Sure the offense hasn't scored but the Defense is keeping them in ball games.
10. Marlette - When you have athletes eventually they are going to break loose and win some games. I expect them to keep it close with their East competition thanks to big plays in the Spread Offense.
11. North Huron - I understand that teams in the small conferences need to schedule tuff opponents to be ready for playoffs but, don't bite off more than you can chew. The Warriors still have Brown City, Deckerville, Mio, Memphis, and Ubly!!!
12. USA - The Pats surprised me with a win over BCAS... That’s probably the only surprise they will see all year with the exception of week 5.
13. Kingston - Kingston made some strides this week by scoring on Deckerville's 2nd/3rd string.
14. Peck - If the pirates hope to rebound this week they are going to need a lot of help......
15. Mayville - It's time for the Wild Cats to drop down the the NCTL so that they can at least finish in the middle of the pack.
16. Bad Axe – Long year for the traditionally poor hatchets…. You would think with an enrollment of (442) that Bad Axe could find the athletes needed to be in that GTCW conversation. I guess time put in during the summer beats enrollment numbers each and every time.

All good points on all the area teams. I would not count Deckerville out against Ubly. They played a flawless game (no penalties at all) against Oscoda. The Owls were not without their impressive moments, but the Eagles shut them down. Don't let Eddie Fury down play his alma mater too much - they are for real.

Cass City got very lucky last week that Brown City couldn't manage a clock to save their life (or the game). The score could have easily been 20-7 BC.

Looking forward to Beach taking on the Rockets this week. It will answer a lot of questions about both teams!

It's another good week in Thumb Football!
