Ubly won't overlook pesky Patriots

UBLY — Ubly coach Bill Sweeney has always preached to his players to take nothing for granted and never assume a game is going to be easy.
The Bearcats have had some tough lessons this year, but still managed their third straight 9-0 regular season.
They will host Unionville-Sebewaing Area (5-4) at 7 p.m. Friday to begin Division 7 playoff action.
Despite defeating the Patriots 38-0 in Week 1, Sweeney knows his team will be faced with a difficult challenge.
“You pretty much throw (Week 1) out the window,” said Sweeney. “We’re a different team, they’re a different team. I watched the tape, but it’s so long ago.
“We’ve improved quite a bit, and they’ve improved tremendously. We tell the kids that we’re not good enough to overlook anybody.”
Ubly and USA are no strangers to playing each other. They have played the first game of the season since 2006, and plan on continuing that rivalry for the foreseeable future.
They have also met in the playoffs three times, with the Patriots holding a 2-1 edge. The last meeting came in 2007, the last time USA made the playoffs. Ubly won 40-14.
Including that game, the Bearcats have won the last four meetings, outscoring the Patriots 162-38.
Past history aside, Sweeney knows what USA football is all about.
“You know you’re going to be in a ball game,” he said. “As always, they’re well-coached and they have some stellar athletes.
“They have four or five guys that are really good football players.
“They broke a lot tackles and played us tough. That score was not indicative of the game. They have outstanding defensive ends and their linebackers are good. They didn’t have one of their linebackers when we played them the first time.”
One of the players who has made a living breaking tackles is running back Tim Canfield.
Canfield, along with Tyler Dick, have done much of the damage for the Patriots on the ground this season.
“He’s the best running back that we’ve seen all year,” Sweeney said about Canfield. “The kids know, they remember. He breaks a lot of tackles and does a lot of things for them — he’s a great football player.
“He’s a tough kid and he plays every down like it’s his last.”
Numbers, or lack of, have been a concern for USA all season.
Most games, the team dresses 15 or less players.
“In all actuality, having 15 guys compared to 22 isn’t all that different, especially when you have eight or nine guys playing both ways,” Sweeney said. “They’ve won so many close games late. A lot of that has to do with their conditioning.”
Even though Ubly finished with an unbeaten record, it has sometimes been an adventure.
Last week, the Bearcats gave up 341 yards passing to North Huron. They also committed a number of penalties and turned over the ball.
In Week 2, their regular season winning streak, which has now reached 32, was nearly ended. Sandusky bolted to a 21-0 lead before Ubly rallied for a 30-28 decision.
“You can’t be lax, you can’t float, you can’t take a break,” Sweeney said. “We told the kids when there are a lack of focus and hustle, those are the type of things that happen.
“This group has had games when they’re not real focused in practice, and it gets frustrating some times.”
Other times, the Bearcats have looked like the team that has made back-to-back semifinal appearances.
In Week 5, they dominated Harbor Beach in a 38-6 decision. In Week 8, they earned their second shutout of the season with a 40-0 victory over Deckerville.
“The games that people have called ‘the big games’ we have shown up for them,” Sweeney said.
Ubly’s Wing-T offense has produced amazing balance this season.
Tyler Peruski leads the team with 777 rushing yards and is tied for the team lead in touchdowns with 12.
Brett Cleary had gained 753 yards and six scores while Bryan Nash has 474 yards and 12 TDs.
No team in the Thumb has more consecutive trips to the playoffs than Ubly’s 10.
“A lot of programs are happy to make the playoffs, these guys understand the finality of the playoffs,” Sweeney said.
“We don’t want to downplay making the playoffs, because that’s a big deal, but these kids realize the season ends somewhere along the line. We’re not just happy to make the playoffs.”
The winner of this game will take on the winner of Friday’s Reese at Saginaw Nouvel contest for the district championship.

USA excited about another shot at Ubly

SEBEWAING — Unionville-Sebewaing Area is over being the underdog.
The Patriots have been there all season long.
“We’ve kind of been the underdog all year,” said USA coach Jason Beagle. “The kids get on the Internet and read the papers. They know we haven’t been picked a lot and they know what’s going on. But I actually think they like playing the spoiler.”
Even Beagle admits the Patriots will have the odds stacked against them once again when they travel to Ubly for a Division 7 opening round playoff game Friday night at 7.
“You can’t get much more of an underdog than (us) going up against a 9-0 team which has been to the semifinals and finals the last few years,” he said. “That’s as big a spread as you can get.
“Getting to the playoffs is something that the program hasn’t experienced in a few years... To me, it’s a good life lesson for them that hard work pays off.”
There isn’t a team around which worked harder than the Patriots in 2010. Saddled with the burden of playing with as few as 13 players on some game nights, USA managed to wiggle their way into the post-season with a 5-4 record, capped by last Friday’s 30-20 victory over Harbor Beach.
“It’s a great reward for the kids who worked hard all season,” said Beagle.
The Patriots get a chance for some revenge, too. In the season opener, Ubly stuck USA with a 38-0 loss. The Bearcats led 24-0 at the half, and put it on cruise control the rest of the way.
Beagle said his staff isn’t even using the Week 1 film to scout the Bearcats.
“We’re using it more to evaluate ourselves and see the mistakes we made,” he said. “As far as scouting them, we’re using stuff toward the end of the season.
“Ubly isn’t 9-0 by accident. They were good in Week 1. And they were good in Week 9. It really doesn’t matter.
“I think we are a much different — and better — team than we were back then. We have been forced to grow because of our numbers.”
Actually, USA is as healthy as it’s been all season heading into the playoffs. The Patriots played the season opener against Ubly minus two of their top linebackers.
“Really, we had some kids who were banged up and didn’t play in that (Week 1) game,” Beagle said. “We’re relatively healthy now. It’s usually the other way around, but it’s kind of the reverse for us. And I think that’s going to help.”
Offensively, USA is led by seniors Chris Harper, Tim Canfield and Tyler Dick. Canfield and Dick get the majority of carries while Harper, though he doesn’t throw much, has had a nice season behind center.
“We don’t really want to get into a shootout with them,” Beagle said. “We joke that when we play them it’s a battle of the fullhouse Wing-T offenses against the 5-2 defense. We’re kind of mirror images of each other.”
Defensively, senior Dakota Gangler leads the team in tackles.
USA is making its first playoff appearance since 2007, a year it had to win the season finale against Pinconning to qualify. In the opening round, the Patriots suffered a 40-14 setback to the Bearcats.
In 2008 and 2009, USA had a combined 3-15 record.
“I’m proud of this group, regardless of what happens,” Beagle said. “They are the ones who have started the turnaround.”
The winner of this game will take on the winner of the Reese-Saginaw Nouvel game for the district championship.

Eagles eager for showdown with SHPC

DECKERVILLE — After consecutive losses in Weeks 7 and 8, Deckerville needed a pick-me-up kind of game in the regular season finale at Lincoln Alcona.
A four-hour bus ride later, the Eagles found themselves energized after a 38-0 victory over the Tigers.
“It was a good experience for the kids — you don’t want to go on a four-hour bus ride and come home losers,” said Deckerville coach Bill Brown. “We went up there and played hard. That was nice to see.”
Brown hopes that kind of boost carries over to Friday night at 7 when the 7-2 Eagles host 7-2 Sterling Heights Parkway Christian in a Division 8 opening round playoff game.
Not only did last Friday’s win provide a much-needed spark, it secured a No. 1 seed for the Eagles, who are as tough as any team in the Thumb on their home turf.
“I don’t know if they believed me, but I kept telling the kids that we had a chance at getting at least two home (playoff) games,” Brown said. “We have a great opportunity. But they know that if we don’t do what we’re supposed to do, they will be packing in their gear come Monday.”
Last Friday, the Eagles led 16-0 after one quarter, extending it to 38-0 at the half on a late second-quarter drive. Deckerville rushed for 320 yards while limiting the Tigers to just 70 total yards.
Not all the news was good from the game, though.
The Eagles lost senior Cody Ross, their leading rusher with over 1,000 yards, for the season with a broken leg.
“Losing Cody is tough, no doubt,” Brown said. “But our backups have played a lot this season. We have some things we can do...”
Deckerville’s backfield certainly isn’t bare, though.
Rick Wilfong, Dillon Lundgren and Andrew Estrada have had fine seasons, and quarterback Tyler Pattullo has big-play capabilities.
Also, sophomore Chris Wolfe came on last week and rushed for 102 yards and one score.
Parkway Christian’s season has mirrored Deckerville’s. Parkway Christian won its first six games before losing to Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest and Riverview Gabriel Richard in Weeks 7 and 8. The Eagles rallied in Week 9, rolling to a 49-8 win over Plymouth Christian.
The Eagles’ option/spread offense is led by quarterback Vinny Delicata, who didn’t play in last week’s game because of an injured ankle but is expected to give it a shot Friday. Tim Weber, Spencer Frazier and Kenny Dalen are Delicata’s favorite targets while Ryan Regener handles duties in the backfield.
“They’re a little bit like Marlette,” Brown said. “Their quarterback is their playmaker. He wants to make things happen. They’re going to spread us out.”
Parkway Christian also has a huge weapon in senior kicker Aaron Mick, who is being recruited by several Big Ten and Mid-American Conference schools. He has a 52-yard field goal this year against Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett, and usually booms kickoffs into the end zone.
Coincidentally, Deckerville and Parkway Christian played in the opening game of the regular season in 2008 and 2009. Last year, Deckerville earned a 41-14 win at home. In 2008, Deckerville traveled south and picked up a 54-47 victory.
“We’re pretty familiar with them, and they know what we’re about,” Brown said.
The Eagles are making their sixth consecutive playoff appearance, and 14th in the last 15 seasons.
“We’re not getting too excited,” Brown said. “We have been here before. We have to go out and be physical, execute, and don’t turn the ball over. If we do that, we have a chance.”
The winner of this game will play the winner of the Bay City All Saints/Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary contest for the district championship.
