Cass City was up 46-0 at the half against BCAS.
HB 12 Marlette 8
Hey! How about that Ubly-Harbor Beach game last week? You two are such homers for Ubly, it couldn't be more obvious. Always have been, always will. In this original post, you stated shaw had six touchdowns against Bad Axe (duh, it's Bad Axe, yet no such stats were mentioned for arguably the biggest game of the season between Marlette and Harbor Beach-and you even had a writer at the game!
Back to the shallow end, USA.
looks like harbor beach is headed to ford field as planned
Sorry, the writer was busy getting his story ready for the paper, then getting a couple hours of sleep to cover cross country.
I don't write anything on the blog. For the record, we have covered three Ubly games compared to five Harbor Beach games. Yeah, I'm a homer, a homer for all the teams in our coverage area, always have been always will be. In the early 2000s, it was USA's time, lately it was Ubly. Now, it's Harbor Beach. Get your facts straight before calling me out.
Want more stats, I suggest you buy a paper or subscribe to our e-Edition.

Whoever the anonymous (HB Fan) was that was complaining...Do you really think that a one sentence mention about Ubly/Bad Axe in the sports blog is really going to outshadow the two page(with photos) article that will appear in the tribune about Marlette and Harbor Beach that will also provide game details and coachspeak? When teams are good, they get more time in the spotlight. As Paul said, Ubly has had it over the past five years because they were significantly better that the rest of the teams in the thumb. USA had it before them. This year it appears to be Harbor Beach, and they'll deserve the spotlight by all means since they have defeated everyone thus far.
Get over it! I agree completely with the post after Paul. You don't realize how good of sports writers Paul and Mike are, They know coaches and players on more than just a sports level, which makes their articles better than writers that just cover a game and don't know anything about the teams or players. Who cares if they are homers or not, They cover the best team in the Thumb no matter what sport it is! Why do you think so many graduated players keep in some contact with them either thru blogs or other means. And they will always defend a Thumb team to the end!!! So regardless what you have to say about them being homers, at least put a name to your post rather than hide behind the anonymous tag!

Brandon, I couldn't agree with you more. Great post!
Mike & Paul,
As I've stated before, we are very fortunate in the Thumb Area to have dedicated sport writers like the two of you. (and others) In these tough times, more & more is being asked, with less & less time to do. Paul, I've witnessed you doing an interview 20 to 30 minutes after a game. I assume you then drive home, do your stories,(God know what time you get to bed) just to start it all over on Saturday. The above opinion from my fellow Harbor Beachian, is one that "isn't" shared by the majority of us, period. Everyone knows, the more sucess the program has, the more press they will get...they are the news at that time. Thanks so much for doing a thankless job we really do appreicate your work!
A shout out to the annonymous post going after Mike and Paul. You think there job is easy? The two of them cover 4 different sports on a weekly basis, everday of the week, their weekends being the busiest more particularly because there is football on friday night, cross country on saturday morning, and even volleyball on saturdays. They cover every team in the area just as equally. The teams that are having a successful season will get more of the spotlight, get over it. If you don't like it, try doing their job for a day. I can't begin to thank them enough for all of the work they put in from doing the contests, blogs, facebook posts, columns, cover stories, stats from EVERY game or meet or match taken place day after day and on top of that, covering national sports for our local u of m fans, msu, cmu, and lions fans. God bless the both of them for being dedicated to such a great area and that they go out of their way to provide everyone with up to minute news. Thanks Mike and Paul. I can't say enough thanks for the both of you.
Dear anonymous, if you are from Harbor Beach you can either change your attitude or not express them. Paul and Mike are two of the best if not the best sports writers in the state. Espicially when it comes to High School sports. So I think I speak for my town and the county when I say thank you.

This fan of HB could be from any school in the thumb. Its just the short term view of a fan who's team is on its way up or down.
The HDT is in very good hands.
What kind of writer responds publicly to criticism?
I respond to comments good and bad. In this case, a person was questioning how I do my job, my intentions and my integrity. So I responded, just like I responded to you. I have no problem with criticism if it is warranted, it makes me reevaluate how I do things, but in this case, I felt it was unfounded.

Harbor beach is going to lose to sandusky 21-7 when they meet, sandusky is a very good team, harbor beach will go into the game with a thought in their head that they already won the gte title because they beat ubly, who's star running back is out for the season because of a torn acl, and marlette which has a good recieving team, sandusky will get the win when they meet
If the Lions can win in Dallas, Lakers could beet H B (:
While I don't doubt Sandusky is capable of beating Harbor Beach, I don't think it will happen because the players thought they won the GTE after beating Ubly. I think they proved that against Marlette.

First, Harbor Beach is not going to Ford Field unless the players have Lions tickets. Second, no the reporters should not respond to anonymous posts. It looks unprofessional. But, I think 6 touchdowns does deserve a mention. Did the hb fan read Thursday's paper- the article featuring both coaches leading up to the game? Probably not.
My thoughts on the football play in the thumb this year. First, I have been around a long time. USA's team in 98 was the best team. Ubly's 08 team was stellar. Eventhough Ubly had a long run, they also did it with exceptional coaching. Football in the thumb has dropped. Look at what Ubly had been doing to these teams the last few years. 9 regular season games and not 1 challenging opponent.
For the record, Sandusky is not good. Marlette and Ubly are all play off teams becuase you are guarenteed 6 wins. Any decent coached team can beat: Mayville, B.A, sandusky, Lakers, Cass City (god awful this year- they have taken a couple of steps back with new coach), Brown City. Then you mix in some NCTL teams and wallah! you are in the playoffs.
FYI. Harbor Beach may win a district but that is it. They do not play any defense.
Ive sat hear and read post after post and never left any responses. Well now I am.
Vassar nevers plays to potential, Reese has a great coach who gets a ton out of his kids, HB is HB- they won't play above their abilities and they wont play below their abilities. BCAS must be pretty bad!
DOME!! Your talkin about the DOME! THE DOME. C'MON MAN!
Nice book! Is it paper back?
I agree with what you are saying. No standout teams this year. I attended the Ubly/ Marlette game and left thinking Marlette is not that strong offensively. Defensively, I thought they were good. I went to the Marlette/ HB game-WET want a refund! HB/ UBLY game- ubly out plays them 2nd half but loose.
To the previous anonymous, this is an interactive blog, as is Facebook. I respond to good and bad comments, especially when I'm accused of being something I'm not. This is an interactive world we now live in.
Second, I think you had some very good points and analysis. Football in the Thumb has had a very good run. And I think it will continue this year, with as many as seven or eight teams from the GTC in the playoffs, as well as two from the NCTL, not to mention 8-man.
As for the playoffs, Harbor Beach looks like it will drop to Division 8 this year. Currently, the Pirates have the third most playoff points of any team in Division 8. Depending on how the draw shakes out, they could go much further than just a district.
Paul P.
Regardless of whether or not we live in an interactive social world, good reporters/writers never respond to criticism. Taking a defensive stance shows a lack of confidence in their work. Do you see anyone Mitch Albom, Drew Sharp, or Michael Rosenberg respond to idiot posters bashing their writing? NO! Because they understand that everyone has a different opinion and not everyone will like their style of writing.
And the example you gave of being unbiased by citing USA in the early 2000's, Harbor Beach in the mid-late 2000's, then Ubly, and Harbor Beach again is ridiculous. In fact, it's contradicting what you claim to be. You're basically saying you side with whatever team is hot at the moment and forget about the rest. And if your job is so tough trying to cover every game, maybe tribune should have more beat writers at games. Just a thought....
Let me respond to one last thing. If anyone is qualified to take good photos, notes and write on a tight deadline on Friday nights to cover games. Please let us know. The only catch is it would have to be for free. We would love to hire more people, but the fact is in this economy, it's not possible. So yes, our job is that tough to get to every game, because what you see is what you get with the Tribune Sports Dept. it's Mike and Paul - that's it.
This is my last post good or bad on this blog. Our Facebook page, however, will continue to be the completely open and interactive place it's been for the past year.

To the anonymous posts attacking Mike and Paul, again, at least he has enough courage to leave his NAME after a post, and in case you didn't notice, its a small area, were not from detroit where there can be thousands upon thousands of comments that are criticizing the writer of a sports article, it's the thumb of michigan, small town and word get's around, we all have pride in what we do, if you don't have anything good to say about these guys then go someplace else. I am currently at college and I am very grateful for the coverage provided by Mike and Pau via facebook, the blog, and etc. Why don't you count your blessings like the rest of us do? You could not have any internet PERIOD and not be able to even POST on here at ALL. Again, thanks Mike and Paul for your long hours and incredible dedication to the thumb of michigan.
I think the score here is 20 to 1. That is if anon is a member.
As of 16 February 2011, there were over 156 million public blogs in existence.
There all a little different. I like this one. Keep up the good work, Mike and Paul
HAHA! So funny! Especially the part about the score thing! HAHA!
