BROWN CITY — Cass City was unable to make a first-half lead hold up against Brown City on Thursday night.
The Red Hawks led midway through the second quarter, but couldn’t hold off the Green Devils, dropping the 28-21 Greater Thumb Conference crossover decision.
Cass City led 16-7 in the second quarter, after Nick Kappen came through with a 21-yard touchdown run.
Brown City closed the half with touchdown runs from Ryan Spokaeski and Nathan Primeau to lead 21-16 at the break. Spokaeski made it 28-16 with a 5-yard scamper in the third quarter.
Josh Jensen got Cass City within one score in the fourth quarter, returning a fumble 80 yards.
Braedon Perzanowski began the scoring for the Red Hawks with a 65-yard run in the first quarter.
Jensen led Cass City with 138 yards on 13 carries while Kappen added 93 yards on 13 totes.
Brown City gained 391 yards on 43 carries. Primeau had 173 yards while Aaron McIntosh added 150 yards.
Reese 46, Bad Axe 0
REESE — Reese improved to 2-0 with the help of some big plays from Matt Frost.
Frost got the Rockets going, scoring on runs of 41 and 59 yards in the first quarter. He also caught a TD in the second quarter.
Troy Elbers added a pair of scores while Evan Campbell had a 38-yard TD and Adam Lefler picked off a pass for a touchdown.
Vassar 50, EPBP 12
PIGEON — Vassar moved to 2-0 overall with a Greater Thumb West win over Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port.
For the Lakers, Nick Post completed six passes for 129 yards and one TD. He also rushed for 50 yards and another score.
Defensively, Nathan Kosinski had 10 tackles while Brody Truemner added nine stops. Nate Krohn chipped in four tackles and a fumble recovery.
USA 16, BCAS 8
BAY CITY — Unionville-Sebewaing Area picked up its first win of the season by beating Bay City All Saints.
USA led 8-0 early on a 45-yard TD run from Tim Zube.
The Cougars tied the game in the second quarter before the Patriots went ahead early in the third quarter on a 5-yard dive from Brandon Harper. Dan Rieck converted the 2-pointer.
Zube rushed for 118 yards for USA while Harper added 108.
Defensively, the Patriots had Mike Bednarski with 15 tackles while John Bauer notched 10 stops.
Deckerville 48, Kingston 7
DECKERVILLE — Deckerville’s Andrew Estrada rushed for 220 yards and six touchdowns in lifting the Eagles to a bounce back North Central Thumb League win over Kingston.
The Eagles led 20-7 after one quarter and 35-7 at the break.
Overall, the Eagles had 540 total yards, including 428 on the ground.
Deckerville’s other score came on a 10-yard strike from Tyler Pattullo to Mason Handley.
Evan Bootz rushed for 200 yards for the Cardinals, including an 80-yard TD scamper in the first quarter.
Marlette 60, Mayville 21
MAYVILLE — Marlette put up big numbers for a second straight game.
The Red Raiders jumped out on Mayville, leading 21-7 after the first quarter and 44-7 by halftime.
Kolby Lange accounted for four scores, tossing for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Donnie Thomas.
Lange also rushed for 127 yards and two more TDs.
Ryan Miller also had 121 yards and a score.
Owen-Gage 42, Burr Oak 0
OWENDALE — Owendale-Gagetown pitched its second straight 8-man shutout in beating Burr Oak.
Hunter Champagne scored three times while Jordan Kain also had a TD. Tommy Kennedy notched 101 yards on the ground for the winners.
Defensively, Andrew Fahrner had 11 tackles while Champagne added nine and one interception, and Kennedy eight and one pick.
