SEBEWAING — For five straight years, Lary Houthoofd and the Unionville-Sebewaing Area softball team have ended the season in Battle Creek.
If the Patriots make their sixth trip, it will not only finish their season, it will bring to a close Houthoofd’s tenure as coach.
Following last Thursday’s practice, Houthoofd was informed that his contract would not be renewed, and the program would be heading in a different direction.
USA is 23-4 overall this season and 215-25 during Houthoofd’s six years. In that span, the Patriots have won three state championships.
USA athletic director Mark Gainforth declined to comment on the move, as did Houthoofd. A message was left with superintendent Kip Walker seeking comment.
The No. 1-rated Patriots will attempt to send their coach out with his fourth title as they begin postseason play at noon on Friday against Port Hope in the Division 4 districts.

what the heck?
Off field issues.
So, it needs to be brought out, or handled in a better way than this.
Handled better? How would you like it handled? From the outside, it looks like this;
1. The school is protecting the players by keeping everything quiet.
2. The school is protecting themselves by keeping everything quiet.
3. The school is proecting the coach by keeping everything quiet.
On the other hand;
1. The family of the coach is going on TV and making this bigger than it needs to be at this time.
2. There is a distraction being created by going on TV and making it about one person, not the team.
Do you really want the reason to come out right now and create more of a distraction?
What are you concerned about?
The kids on the team is the only thing to be concerned about at this time.
This is exactly how it should be handled. Those that want it to "come out" want that for their own selfish reasons. USA school district as well as Huron County is small enough it will all be common knowledge soon enough.
I say we should worry about this after the season is over because I'm pretty sure they are still in postseason play, so let's make this about the team and players, not the coach
Ha, who fired the coach with time on the clock?
School is protecting themselvs, because it wasn't handled correctly. Plain and simple.
What did the school do wrong?
Again, please tell us what the school did wrong. How should they have handled this situation?
If every thing was handled ok, then why are we talking about it?
Its not about the coach its about the kids, they want him next year! He didn't do anything to harm the kids and the kids respect him as a coach. They have worked hard to get where they are and don't want it to be thrown away next year.
I agree, and I think most people agree also. Big problem with the way this has been handled.
In high school it should not bye just about wins and loses. He has certainly proved him self with the wins, however is this the type of example we want for our children. If it quacks like a duck than it probably is a duck. If the only interest is wins and loses that he should stay otherwise????? H g
Quoting "I agree, and I think most people agree also. Big problem with the way this has been handled."
Tell us how this should have been handled? Should the school give out all the information they have? It looks like they are protecting the coach.
let the team finish the season. Only knowing that what ever he did, wasn't enough to fire him on the spot, then let it go until after the season is over.
I have not heard a negative comment about coach larry yet. What are these negative comments we keep hearing about? It isn't about just winning but it is about commitment, hard work, and reward. That is something worth teaching our kids.
well said, Sure hope this works out, for the good of all.
The thing that is confusing, and even contradictory, is that a coach with the experience and success of Mr. Houthoofd would not normally be terminated unless they had seriously violated a rule or principal. On the other hand, if that had occurred, then he could not be trusted to coach the team for the rest of the season, so the allegations are obviously not of any type of abuse, and have not created safety concerns. Which leads to the logical question of why a school would essentially fire the most successful coach they have ever had in any sport, unless he had done something that would impact the emotional or physical safety of his players. It really does not make much sense.
