The new issue…..
Why is the blonde on Ubly's basketball team back on board? Shouldn't cussing out the principal have some sort of substantial disciplinary action for the student involved?
Not only is he back on the team, he played last night against CPS…?
What on earth is going on in Ubly?
…this whole thing is setting a horrible precedence….not to mention the blonde kid has been bragging about it...
This is why a major change in coaching is about to happen in Ubly. Why fight the inevitable? I hope his parents are happy that getting him back on the basketball floor will ruin the rest of the sports programs. Good Job!! Also, nice to see the coach exhibited class by putting him into the game as the first sub. Way to support the school staff!!
how about you get the facts straight before you go and start ripping on the kid and his family
I don't know what facts you are talking about, but the first two posters did not say anything that isn't factual.
I guess if the kid was really guilty about cussing at the principal, however there were several students that day and the principal doesn't know who did the cussing! So why say "disciplinary action for the student involved?" Do you have proof that he said anything at all? Why should he not be able to play???
Change is good. Maybe a change in the coaching over in Ubly would be welcomed....I think that the basketball coach was very classy for playing his player. At least this coach plays all of his players. How about that school staff ?? If you saw the blonde on the basketball court playing then you must have seen how some of the staff members were acting also.. Now that was quite classy wasn't it???
from hearing the "blonde" as you say cuss (or more like chant) to the principal, I can say it IS a fact.
i also know this "blonde" has a record of being rude, arrogant, and disrespectful to his teachers.
but what IS cool is to see mommy and daddy fight this "blonde's" battles for him as he walks around disrespectful towards many teacher figures.
I'm commenting on the statement by anonymous:
"At least this coach plays all of his players."
This isn't elementary or junior high basketball anymore. This is high school basketball. Just like high school football or other competitive and similar structured team sports; the players who put time into the game and develop skill play. I commend the efforts of a coach to play every player, but the players have all the time in the world to prove themselves in the off season. If coaches take minutes away from players who actually have skill and put in time, they are degrading the competitive nature of the team. If kids don't invest time on their own watch, how can they complain about their minutes?
The idea that everybody deserves playing time has undertones of socialism. In fact, we're seeing more of this now than ever: the entitlement mentality. This mentality is crushing the spirit of what made our country great. I know we're simply talking about high school basketball, but the logic being used here is alarming.
For Example:
If Jimmy spends the summer shooting 500 shots a day, jumping rope 500 times a day, work on ball handling for a half hour, and continues to push himself on his game; he can expect his investments to eventually pay off in better shooting, jumping, and ball handling. As basketball season comes around, little Bobby down the street (who hasn't put any time into the game) comes out for the basketball team. He's naturally athletic enough to contribute to the team, but only as a practice player. Through the season, little Bobby gets upset because he isn't playing as many minutes as Jimmy. Of course, at this point the last thing on Jimmy's mind isn't how many minutes he plays, his mind is on winning games. When Bobby subs in for Jimmy and continues to play in his place, Jimmy gets frustrated. He isn't upset because he's not getting minutes; he's upset because Bobby is turning the ball over, taking bad shots, not seeing opportunities to score, and ruining possessions in the course of the game. Because of Bobby's inexperience and lack of skill, the team's win is compromised. Jimmy is left frustrated and discouraged. He doesn't understand why little Bobby who really doesn't care about the game (he really just plays basketball to stay busy and be with his friends) is given the opportunity to be a detriment to the team. This ends up lessening Jimmy's work ethic and motivation to become a better player, and furthermore, his motivation to better his team. Not only is Jimmy's work ethic hurt, but so is the rest of the teams. Why would the team want to work on their game and individually become better (thus to be a better united team), if all the players are going to be played?
From this simplistic example, we can see why a "socialistic" basketball team can ruin the competitive edge of a team. The competitive nature of team is what makes these types of sports work.
The comment, "At least this coach plays all of his players," is one I have a hard time understanding in the type of society which we live. I think that statement is ignorant and extremely shallow.
Obviously high school and college are completely different planes, but I wonder how many college basketball coaches play all their players. This is high school basketball, but this isn't junior high.
I think Ken has been doing an excellent job this year, good work coach! A 16-4 record is amazing. I have had a great time watching through the season. Good luck to Ubly in Districts!
my thoughts are with some of the Ubly players who have practiced for the past two weeks. The "blonde" didn't and these hard working young men had to sit and watch while the "blonde" subbed in before they did.
hmmm….
Joel
Excellent post. Couldn't have said it better myself. As to the other posters, there is a thing called Zero Tolerance that was put into affect last fall for this student. He was told that one more mistake and he wouldn't miss just one game (like during football season). He would be off the team. The only reason he is playing is because of a paperwork problem. Sometimes when you stand up for what you believe in you have to pay the price.
The real reason is because there's a certaih teacher in the school system who thinks he runs the show. The kid did mess up after the "paper" was written, however didn't get kicked off the football team. Why??? Is it because the football coach still needed him for the rest of the season??? The way I understood it the A.D. is the problem. He is the one that messed up big time.
Joel Jr.
Outstanding post. It is truly uplifting to know that there are still some people around who understand that the value of competitive sports exceeds "the bragging rights".
It saddens me that there is a "socialist" mentality as well as a "prove he did it" mentality prevalent in the area. In the not to distant past when a student made a mistake (and believe me we made plenty) they had the character to stand up admit it and take the punishment, which more often than not was a paddle on the backside or a several hundred word essay regarding the subject.
What is most troubling to me though is the fact that we are talking about students who run to mom and dad to handle their issues. These are not elementary kids! These are students who are scheduled to graduate high school in a few months. I pray that our kids never have to depend on teammates like this for anything more important than a high school basketball game.
Wow, clearly there are some adults posting on this message board...FINALLY! Great posts, especially by Joel Jr. He had the stones to drop the "socialism" card. The bottom line is people (everyone in society) just don't want to be held accountable for anything. They want entitlement, bailouts, handouts, ten 2nd chances, etc.
Do we really want people flipping burgers making the same amount of money as a doctor, lawyer, dentist, etc.? What would be the point to ever become a doctor if I can make just as much money being a custodian?
But, our country is headed that way, so we're all in trouble.
What is the difference of what those kids did standing in unity for what they believe and what the coaches are doing by all resigning? A teacher stated in that room that he could see that some of those kids wanted to get on the bus, but they knew they couldn't because they would be picked on. Well I know for a fact, if all the coaches don't follow the Head football coach they will be an outcast. The students have learned from the best to stand up for what they believe in, by their football coaches. They have threatened to quit two times before this so they could get their way, and they're supposed to be the adults.
Is the person who wrote this last post at 10:25am serious? Its not even worth responding to.
agree with anonymous that posted at 10:25. seen it first hand
We all stand up for what we believe in if a football coach wants to resign that's his choice. The choice of the A.D not doing his job-again his choice. Teachers want to act like preschoolers at the game their choice. Parents acting like preschoolers, and so on. Please like any one of us wasn't a little cocky in school and tried to pull one over at some point? Get real and get over it. To former coaches sit back and relax it's out of your hands, you have resigned from coaching and resigned to posting on blogs.
Anonymous at 10:49 are you lost for words cuz it's the TRUTH. If we as a community expect our students to behave in such a manner, then the coaches should be held accountable to follow the same rules. I don't feel that it is acceptable for a grown adult to run around with a resignation and wave it around in other staff members hands. Or Walk into a school board meeting and threaten the board that he and his followers will all quit if they don't vote his way. All this is, is that an individual in the school has to pout when he doesn't get his way, He will do what ever it takes to hurt innocent people, no matter what the consequences. It's sad to know that a group of adults (teachers) are going to pick on a student. Maybe they should have bullying classes for the teachers too. Thanks Anonymous 11:09.
"as he walks around disrespectful towards many teacher figures[and students and parents and other coaches. Are we forgetting anyone?]"
We must be talking about our football coach here?! Any student who has sat in his class knows this.
Secondly, those who signed the handbook, which the athletic director had failed to ensure every athlete and parents had signed, the steps written in the handbok are to have "mommy and daddy" have a meeting.
If coaches play kids based on their respectfulnes in school, do the respectful student athletes get the most playing time on field? No, and especially not during football season. The handboook says nothing about playing athletes based on their respectfulnes so quit making up reasons for why the kid should not play. The blonde kid had been discipled and now he is back on the team. ITS OVER WITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE WILL PLAY NOW BASED ON HIS WORK ETHIC IN PRACTICE.
Yeah its not worth responding to because you have nothing to say. 10:25 is right!
Bill Sweeney is just PMSing..so are all the other coachs&teachers.i havent heard any basketball teammates complaining when he was put in the game. ive talked to the other players and asked if they felt he should have been kicked off the team. None of them said yes. They were all excited to see him and glad he could be a part of the team
Why are most of the posts/arguments under "Anonymous?"
When administrators, teachers, coaches, and other leaders get letters in the mail that aren't signed by a person's name; when an individual hides behind the cloak of the unknown, their comments are not worth considering or reviewing.
I appreciate many of your ideas and opinions, but I can't give much merit to them when I don't know who's opinions I'm reading.
[For some of you that don't know how:

I hope we can keep a sense of respect for each other's opinions on this blog. I also hope we can come out of the shadows of the "Anonymous" and have an adult-like discussion.
Joel,
C'mon I went to school and seen your dad and Bill sitting on the Blog and when we went up to their desks they tried to minimize it out. Do they think we were born yesterday? The first two posts are probably your dad and bill. How is it Bill could leave school while we were in class and take his garbage out? How was it he called a players parents and had an argument with them in front of the students in his class? He was on his cell phone talking about his diveorce while students were in class. He was in Becker's gym class more than he was in his own. It seemed he had conference hour every hour of the day because he was always out the class. With all that he should have been let go from his position as a teacher. But that's the union for ya. Joel it's no different than on the basketball court they shouldn't get the same pay as the other teachers that work hard and put effort in the teaching. I hope with new adminstration they no longer allow this to happen.
If only the public knew the horrible things that the Board President and his puppet Superintendant were going to push through until Bill had the courage to hold him accountable to following policy he adopted himself. This "dictatorship" from a micro-managing president, a gutless super who cannot stand up to him, and the silence of the good people in Ubly are what is ruining the school's great reputation. Unfortunatly things are spinning out of control at this point but enough is enough.
The laughable part is people are bad mouthing bill but he is doing all this in the name of integrity, character, and doing things the right way. Its too bad it has to take him and other teachers protesting to get the silent majority on their feet to get this to stop. We should thank them for being strong enough to do it.
Another funny thing. Go back in the archives to the superintendant's recent evaluation. I would love to know who came up with that b.s. because to say that he has a "great relationship with the staff" and "connection to the community" is a JOKE!!
the board had nothing to do with this the A.D, principal, and superintendant where the people that allowed the this kid back on the team...no one on the borad had anything to do with this incident...
I'd like to comment on something else as well.
Winning programs don't just happen. 99.9% of the time, state championship teams have a community who rallies behind and believes in their players, the team, the coaches, athletic directors, and administration. The selfish mentality concerned more with "me" than "we" is a cancer. Its a hard condition to work under as a coach/teacher/administration; and quite honestly any other cooperate slanted vocation. My hope would be that the high school players in Ubly, as well as the rest of Huron County will be able to feel a community that believes in them as a whole. How great a culture we could create if we could only look past the pessimism and focused on being positive. This culture starts in each or our lives, our homes, and our families. If we aren't willing to support our community, we should never expect success.
Winning programs don't just happen.
In regards to Bill doing things in the right way... look back at 12:26. But hey you forgot the time when he gave a student extra credit for taking his garbage out. Thats definitely the right way to do things!?????
Integrity, character just means he is not getting his way.
They got rid of their puppet superintendent two years ago. Now the teachers aren't getting away with what they used to and have to start doing their jobs.
The boys team is heading into districts this week. If the anyone wants them to succeed, this all needs to be put in the past. You can't expect kids to sit in school all day, faced with these type discussions or matters about something that should be over with. They need to be focused about the game! GOOD LUCK UBLY BEARCATS!!!!
I attend the Ubly Schools and I don't take any sports. I know about the incident that took place on Feb. 11th. I've seen and heard about all that has taken place over the last couple of weeks. For what it's worth, the students only wanted to come back for our Coming Home assembly. whether they felt it was the right thing to do, they were punished with a day off from school (all that were involved). They were suspended for a day because of their actions. The incident that followed between the basketball player shouldn't have anything to do with why everyone is upset. He was punished with a day of suspention, just like everyone else. The rumor is that this player was on a 2nd suspention. There was never a suspention in the fall. He had a DETENTION- big difference. Now I'm seeing a big portion of the teachers standing in the hallways talking about all of this garbage. Do they even have the right information or are they going on rumor? Why can't we all just drop this and move on?
I have no idea what the issue was that prompted the students to stand in unity for what they believe. While I may totally agree or disagree with their position on the issue if they believed in it enough to suffer the repercussions of that decision then I support their right to do so. It really doesn’t matter if their motivation was to make a statement or just avoid being picked on or outcast. The fact is they made a decision and they are subject to the consequences of that decision.
All of us make some good decisions and some bad decisions. And most of us that are responsible enough to accept the consequences of those decisions are called adults. Others will be quick to try to deflect the blame for a bad (or unpopular) decision onto someone else. Why am I surprised that so far it is only the teachers, basketball coach, football coaches, AD, and the principal. Come on gang there are still a lot of folks involved at that school. Is everybody sure the bus drivers didn’t screw up? How about the janitor, or the secretary? I’m sure I missed somebody and for that I apologize but have faith and be patient you to will receive your share of the blame.
In regard to “What is the difference of what those kids did standing in unity for what they believe and what the coaches are doing by all resigning?” I suspect the big difference is that some of the decision makers will spin the decision in a manner to blame others while the coaches will make their own call and will be willing to accept the responsibility for that decision as they always have.
Can't we all hate each other in peace????
Hate to break the bad news, but Ken was not a PUPPET super. He just didn't let certain board members run the school. Just like Dave did for many years. Let's face it; the school board right now is a 4-3 split. Rocky knows that if he doesn't follow the group that has the votes, then he doesn't keep his job. This is called simple politics.
Excuse me but the puppet show is at HB not Ubly, HB school board meetings are a total joke. I hope the Ubly Sup had enough sense to call in a lawyer to make this right. The kids are minors - it's stupidity not to include the parents - can we say lawsuit. I suggest that the nay nayers look at the policies before acting and posting. What if the blonde was your kid and policies weren't followed? A policy is a policy and if is not followed how can you enforce it.
I don't believe it's a bad thing the board is split. They all are entitled to their own opinion and to make decisions on how they see fit with situations. (But sometimes they can be mis-informed with twisted info.) It's a good thing to have that on a board so things are dealt with fairly. I give credit to the board and feel they have been working together better now with a new administration in.
NO TOLERANCE POLICY. NO TOLERANCE POLICY. NO TOLERANCE POLICY. That's what all the teachers and school faculty members are screaming for. Just follow the NO TOLERANCE POLICY. Just follow the rules...
Well, that policy WAS followed and still these teachers did not like the outcome. Read through that ENTIRE atheltic handbook and you tell us (all you haters out there!) what this blonde kid really did do to violate it and get kicked off his team. Oh, that's right. There was NOTHING. If you are SO concerned why he was able to play again, go ask the athletic director. He's the one that didn't follow policy.
And further more, why is THIS kid the ONLY one being blamed and critized and bullied. Out of ALL of those 20 some kids from the imfamous Feb 11th day to stand up for themselves, this kid is taking the blunt of it and being singled out. Why is that? Probably because the "head honcho" of the school staff/football coach is done with him. He's not going after anyone else because he still has "football" ties to them. But he doesn't need this kid anymore. So let's just pick him...he's weak.. he won't stand up for himself...yeah, yeah, yeah critize all you want to, you haters, but when you have a whole entire school staff against you as an 17/18 year old, how would you feel!?! His parents are standing up for him, which is something ANY parent would do. So STOP ragging on the kid and his parents!!! THEY are the ones who have been wronged.
What horrible things were the board president and super going to do? C'mon spill the beans we would all like to know. My kid was one of the kids that got to dance that night and I will tell you the president was very professional. He did not want to make a mochary out of this, he himself stated the kids were going to have to serve WHATEVER discipline action they were given, BECAUSE they didn't get on the bus. Why is that they didn't allow these kids to come home for Homecoming? The rules need to be Made up in the beginning of the year and followed, not changing them half way thru the year. The tech center kids better never be allowed to come home for any future assemblies because this is what started it all.
He was punished just like the other kids. They were all issued a One day out of school suspension. He was told during the football season that he was on "zero tolerance" through the athletic department. This means that if he had one more detention, suspension, etc. the rest of the school year that he could no longer be eligible. None of the other basketball players had disciplinary action taken on them earlier in the year. From what I have heard, everyone, including the school board and administration agreed with this. The problem was the legal issue of not having the handbook signed. No one is picking on the poor kid. The issue that has most people upset is that after not practicing for 2 weeks, he was the first off the bench. The coach basically told the school board, administration, and the teachers that they are wrong and that he was right.
Yeah he did get a detention in Sept and yes he was then told about the zero tolerance. Well guess what there was a second detention in Oct and IT WAS SOMEHOW overlooked. Wonder why! And out of 4 hrs of afterschool detention he WAS supposed to serve, he only served 1.Wonder why, oh thats right because he had football practice to attend. The school staff, board and community have not been told the true facts! Just ask the A.D.
As a proud Ubly resident and supporter of academics and athletics alike, this whole mess makes me sad and borderline embarrased. Ubly used to be a no-frills town, but all the "drama" that has occurred with the school over the past 2 years blows me away.
Don't throw the AD under the bus, I'm sure the "zero tolerance policy" given for a good reason. Okay, so it was a "near-zero" policy, and only now saw that the handbook wasn't signed, but HE'S DOING THE RIGHT THING. Kids need to be held accountable, and I'm sure the AD will be held accountable and his bosses will make sure a new policy is in place next year so this doesn't happen again. But it's definitely not something to lose a job over.
And the coaches "quitting" all the time to prove a point is getting old. I agree with most of reasoning behind why they have done it, but there are better ways to go about it. I supported it the first time, supported it the second time (but took a step back), but this time I now just shake my head. Quitting punishes the athletes/kids the most, and only shows you're quitting on the team - who wins with this? I encourage people to stand up for their beliefs, but time to get a little more creative.
To the person who responded at 3:07 and wrote: "The coach basically told the school board, administration, and the teachers that they are wrong and that he was right."
That is a twist on the facts to try to take the blame off who deserves it and put it on the coach. The coach was literally told at the beginning of the JV boys game from the athletic director to play Tyler (not necessarily start him for senior night though).
The reason that the AD told the varsity coach this is because the superintendent told the AD that Tyler can and should play (The zero tolerance had not been signed during football season; plus Tyler had already been punished for the 3 games previous to senior night).
Also, the school board was not responsible for the decisions on gameday. That was between the superintendent and the parents.
So to say that the coach went against the school's staff, administration, etc. is just wrong. In fact, he went with them. He played the middle man in a sticky situation and really didn't make any drastic decisions. The only people he went against was Bill Sweeney and his followers. If the superintendent and AD did not want Tyler to play basketball, they would have not let him back on the team. Simple as that. The coach just coached.
And to the people crying that Tyler was the first one off the bench while other players sat, you can only get away with that because nobody here has mentioned that Tyler checked in with 4 other bench players at the same time. 5 in, 5 out. So if you want to keep adjusting the truth, you could argue Tyler was 5th off the bench that night. Personally Tyler held it well not being able to start with the four others on senior night.
As others have pointed out earlier, this whole zero tolerance thing should have gotten Tyler kicked out of football season, but Tyler was a heck of a running back and Bill wasn't worried about teaching kids "character and responsibility" during his coaching season.
Good luck to the boys on Monday! Just play the game as a team and keep having fun! (even if some fans aren't)
What the heck does Bill Sweeney have to do with this? I think you guys are off base. This is a situation between the administration and the young man. If I am not mistaken Bill is an english teacher not an administrator.
Bill has nothing to do with this and he is a history teacher-FYI. I am going to summarize what has been said so far. People are upset that a young man did not practice but played. Teachers are mad. Parents are mad. It appears that students are chiming in and voicing their opinion and it appears they are mad. Someone has said that all the coaches have resigned. I think we can all learn something here. We are human, we have emotions, we make mistakes and we get mad.
I am not saying we need a group hug but I do think we need to accept the fact that people are going to disagree. The parents are seeing this from a parental situation- they are protecting their cub- and that is what a parent should do. A parent also needs to accept the fact that maybe sometimes your kid might be wrong! And the teaching staff and administration are seeing things from a different perspective. They question the fact that they feel a wrong has been committed and with that there should be a punishment. Both sides are correct, but how do we come to an agreement? There has to be leader to make the final decision. In the school setting that leader is the superintendent.
It is true that Bill does have a lot to do with this. He encouraged the AD and principal to take action on Tyler and keep him off the team to teach him a lesson (which should have been taken care of a long time ago.) Then Bill did his whole "I'm resigning again" thing to put pressure on the staff and make them try to punish Tyler more than what they were. Since he didn't get his way, he should have left it alone. But instead he quit coaching to prove a point- again!
Hey everyone. Things could be a lot worse.

Think about what that community is going through before you decide to post any more crap. I don't care what side you are on.
Yeah know what? Why is it all these people have something to say, but not leaving a name on here, and not to mention, when openings are available for coaching positions and other things that have to do with the school none of these people ever put their name in the running? Yeah they might not get it, but throw your name in there!
It's sad to see all these anonymous (good character) people voicing their opinions on what has happened. Its always something, people always want to throw coaches under the bus, I don't know how many times in the past 15 years about parents complaining about coaches and their kids playing time or something else with the team. Maybe if these young men and women would talk to the coach about playing or other issues, they have about the team, rather than going to their parent where they only hear one side of the story then start a whole campaign on why a coach should get fired, they go right to the coach and talk to them!
I'm just so glad were all so obsessed with a single kid pretty much. But how many of you that are writing this stuff tried to mentor this young man? PROBABLY NO ONE! You have no idea what he could be dealing with in his life. Maybe he just needs an outside voice to listen to him and offer him advice, rather than his family and friends, maybe he needs you to care and to hear what he has to say. You may not think that its worth doing, but you'd be surprised when somebody else takes the time to listen to a young man, what it can do for him!
And by all these inside sources we have (but don't leave a name) that know EXACTLY what Bill, A.D. Super, and anyone who has done to skew the outcome of what has happened, maybe you all should be working for tabloid magazines because you all sure know how to get the inside scoop on things! Sad to see that (I'm assuming you are all adults) are venting on here about a young man, and I'm sure very few of you have ever asked to set up a meeting at Ubly Schools with the coaches, A.D., Super, and whoever else, and clear the air about all this stuff, but no take the immature approach and do it on a sports blog that is supposed to highlight players and teams and create good discussion topics, not trash!
My question is concerning the whole pep assembly: It's their coming home, the players play on the team they are pepping up, why not give them a break and let them stay at school with their fellow classmates/teammates and go to the pep assembly? That part of it is just ridiculous
Whow, just learned about this hoopla earlier today.
lots of assumptions, guesses and opinions on what has happened with only a couple of posts that really make any sense.
Let's start with Feb 11th, coming home. earlier that week the tech students were informed that they would, like other times, be coming back in time for the assembly. at the last minute the principle informed them over the PA that they would not (decision made due to here hearing that some of the kids intended to go home instead of attend the assembly), instead of waiting and going after those kids she penalized them all.
they then would not get on the bus until she talked with them. one teacher told them that they needed to get on the bus as this could be deemed a domenstration which is a punishable offense. when the principle appeared she did not ask what was going on she told them "get on the bus or you will be suspended", they all promply got on the bus. crisis over right.
Nope, upon their return they were all told that they were being suspended for 3 days for insuboardination. this then lead to her changing it to two days with no after school activities for all. after a very heated discussion between parents and administrators it was determined that it would be one day and all would be allowed to participate in the activities.
Now as for the flap about people resigning, the no tolerance issue, things not being signed i really don't know about that.
it sounds like that is just a matter of not making sure that all the "i's" are dotted and "t's" are crossed and it is being used to prevent someone from losing out on their final year and a few people are not happy with it. such is life, as i was told recently when a uncle of mine passed away, life basically sucks, things won't always go your way the only thing you can do is take your lumps, learn from it and move on.
as for all the "anonymous" comments grow a pair and be responsible enough that if you are gonna post, bash someone or group at least be able to put a name on it or keep it to yourself
The "blonde" has had so many chances. First of all, he is a very hard working student maintaining a D average(sarcastic). He has been absent from school about 25 times this year, and has come halfway through school hours about another 20 times. And lastly, his parents always bail him out because of the mistakes he made. He knew there was a zero tolerance policy, and he still acted the way he did. If you ask me, the blonde isg etting off lucky because his mommy and daddy bail him out. Good luck when your 30 years old and your parents arent there to bail you out whenever you get in trouble. Some parents dont get it at all.
For one to know what his grade average is, you must be a teacher. It sure is nice to know that teachers with that access would uphold the confidentiality that is supposed to be between the parent/student/teacher. I applause you for being such a man/woman to post that out on the blog. His grades is not the issue at hand. Please stop it is over and done with. For the parents bailing him out I would not want my son/daughter to be ganged up on by a group of adults. It sounds like it wasn't in black and white and procedures weren't followed. Hopefully next time a teacher starts a witch hunt on a student that he does his homework and makes sure proper steps were followed. And if I was his fellow staff member and he misled me into backing him up with twisted facts I wouldn't put trust in what he says in the future.
Obviously, you have not been in the school for the blondes whole high school career. First off, it doesnt take a genious to know that he has bad grades. When he misses a game due to ineligebility, its not much of a secret is it? No teacher has to tell others of his grades. Its just obvious. How is he being ganged up on by adults?? He has a long history of breaking the rules, getting in trouble, basically just doing whatever he wants.
I dont think that finally disciplining a student should be called "ganging up on him".
Thats the key word HISTORY(which means in the past) if you didn't know that. How many games has he missed because of his grades this year? How many pink slips has he recieved this year for breaking the rules in class? This is called labeling and not giving a student a chance to clean up his act. It's part of our government or there wouldn't be enough jails in the country to house all those that have screwed up in their life.
First, I also would like to agree with Brandon who posted on everybody angrily leaving comments and being anonymous. If you want to post your angrily worded response at least have enough balls to leave a name. Second, this entire thing is being completely skewed in the facts. I am a student that is currently going to school with this "blonde" who has gotten back on the team due to a loop hole. Many of you say that he deserves to play. Well, not a single person has presented any evidence to say that he should. Lets look at these facts. This student had been disciplined multiple times for being rowdy and arrogant. Skipping class and showing up halfway through the day. I have been in classes with him and he did nothing but distract teachers and students whenever we had the pleasure of having him in class for more than 1 day. Finally, the administration did something about it when he screwed up again in our senior year. They gave him a contract to stay behaved or be kicked off. He behaved long enough, than once the Feb. 11th incident happened the student did not have enough sense to remember that he was on THIN ICE. He stuck along with the group and was disciplined. He violated the contract. He should be kicked off, END OF STORY. What many of you who are angrily writing on here believe that the administration is wrong. Let me tell you something, SPORTS ARE A PRIVILEGE. THEY ARE NOT A GUARANTEE. I am an athlete just like this "blonde" and I have to follow the handbook just like everybody else. I am not given any special treatment for it and I do NOT expect any. What I do it for is the respect and love of the game. What this "blonde" does is shameful and disgracing to the entire Ubly Community School District. What this "blonde" did is wrong. You all should have enough moral and common sense to know that (or lack there of).
This is hilarious and looking at it as someone who doesn't have a stake here are a few thoughts.
#1 If the blonde was part of a mob chanting obsenities then he should be subject to the punishment. Sure he has a freedom of speech, but too many people confuse that with a lack a repercussion. I can go tell my boss he's a useless blank, but I certainly should expect to be at the minimum reprimanded if not fired.
#2 I'd have more respect for the kid if he stood up and said "I was wrong". Maybe BYU had it right.
#3 About playing time...I can tell you the principle of what is wrong there. If you aren't at practice for two weeks, how can you even be aware the current gameplan? As a former player, I'd be livid that he was given "crucial" minutes. I'd also not be happy with his decision to take part in the mob when he was on thin ice and effect the outcome of my season.
#4 Stop bashing teachers and coaches. As a parent you send your most valuable asset to those people and ask the to help your child learn to grow up. If you don't like those people, move somewhere that the teachers and coaches meet your expections. My guess...you'll never be happy.
#5 Sounds to me that the inmates (parents) want to run the asylum (school sports programs). You want to know what happens when that happens...go look at Bad Axe. When's the last time they had a football team, or a basketball team, or golf or baseball for that matter. The rest of conference thanks you Ubly parents. Get rid of what you have. We'd love to see it.
I would like to say that this "blonde" persay that has been suspended from the ubly basketball team had no right to be kicked off of the team because not half of the team had signed the ubly athletic handbook, that is what the policy is on, every practice every game, each and every student has to have three things, emergency form, physical, and the student athlete handbook signed, which over half of the team did not have, so everyone should get their facts straight
Anonymous said "they have to have things signed...." You mean to tell me, this is all about a kid not signing something? You mean he is guilty but since he did not sign something he is not guilty? Or are you saying he did not know the repercussions of such actions? What you wrote is quite comical. You are dismissing his actions because he did not sign a physical, emergency form or a student athlete handbook. What you are actually saying is he is not responsible because he did not sign a handbook or his physical card? What you are saying is that everyone should get their facts straight.... He did not sign his physical card, emergency card or handbook, therefore he can screw up all he wants because he did not complete a form SO really what you are saying is....ABSURD! If this is what this whole thing is about, you should be embarrassed that this is even taking place. I was under the assumption that he was kicked off the team because he was on a zero tolerance policy. But since he did not sign this physical card, it don't apply to him.
So let me get this straight. If I were to cheat on my test, get caught, but not sign my name on the test, I did not cheat. Eventhough, there was a spot on the test that said NAME followed by a line. And on this line I was supposed to write my name. So what you actually saying is he did not sign a card. Therefore, he is exempt from any punishable offense. Do you really beleive that?
Good luck Ubly!
There was only one person who authorized the "blonde" to play and it was not the A.D. When are we going to go back to enforcing rules and a code of conduct? Students have a right to voice their opinions but, not to swear and protest at teachers or adminstrators or even parents. Would you let your kid talk to you that way? I didn't think so. Even after they were told to get on the bus (which some did) some decided to take off in their cars. I suppose the school is responsible for them driving off during school hours. These kids better figure out that in the real world if you act like this at your place of employment you will be looking for a new job. Period! No second chances and a we feel sorry for you.
Most the people commenting on this are exspose to be mature adults and let me repeat this mature adults. nobody i have read on these comments were acctually there well heres a fact for all of you u all need to grow up tyler should be punished along with everybody else satnding there. i was a student who was standing there with them tyler started calling her a bitch, an asshole and other stuff everybody else just followed him and for all you who are disrespecting bill sweeney you all nedd to be more mature you had no disrespect for him when ubly went to ford feild or when he was helping david out before he passed away so grow up he was simply following the rules that were in the student hand book. In the book that we all have to sign to be allowed in school there is a section called DEMONSTRATION which means no protesting basicly but that is what they did and bill did not pms or cry because he got his way he was trying to save us all form getting suspened or worse exspelled. you all grow up and dont assume and play well i know cause YOU DONT KNOW THE FACTS YOU WERE NOT THERE I WAS AND ALSO KIDS LIE so you know Again as i stated was MATURITY is key you people know not 1 fact and you know bill was one of the best coaches in the state of michigan and hes gone now because you think a puruski gets his way because hes a little baby and thinks he desirves everything so get your facts right before you post because you all cry and whine about this well he desirves his punishment as long with other kids who were standing there even me i desirve a punishment what he did was wrong and your all harrasing bill swenney hes a nice guy and your all mocking him and being cry babys so mature and grow up and get your facts right before you make your opinion.
It looks like I may be a bit late to the party, but I'll chime in just for fun. And before I go too far I'll admit, I haven't read all of the posts in their entirety. I was fortunate enough to play for some of the great coaches that were mentioned in a few of these posts (Sweeney, Becker, Leipprandt, and some of Coach Sweeney's "followers"). I was lucky enough to be a part of some great teams that really started the winning tradition that the people from Ubly have become accustomed to. Coming back to various sporting events in the past few years, the feel at Ubly has been different. When we won back in our years, the people were happy and grateful. Now I get the feel that winning trophies and being successful is something that should just be passed on from one year to the next. To the people of Ubly, I'll say this, be careful what you wish for. You've already played a part in getting rid of one of the amazing coaches I've mentioned, and it will be a sad day when you lose all of the aforementioned. These coaches have touched far more lives in a positive manner than they have in a negative way...and it's not even a close count.
why dont we all just drop it, tyler is back on the team, and thats that. is it not? if you hate the kid that much that your still posting on this blog about how he should be punished, get a life, hes on the team so deal with it
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight
As a student of Ubly, I am deeply embarrased by this whole mess. At one point in my time here at Ubly I would be willing to sacrifice anything for such a great community, however, now, I am ashamed to even be a part of the Ubly Community Schools District, let alone the graduating class of 2011. This whole issue has divided the senior class, the staff, school board, and administration. This may be rash, but this is where I stand on all of this.
WOW! It is done & over with. Let it go. Hoepfully EVERYONE learned from it-from the administration down to the student body. You can not go back & redo it-if you could I am sure Wes Leonard & the whole student body & community of Fennville, MI would like to. Life is to short. Good Luck Ubly Bearcats! Enjoy today, live for tomorrow & learn from the past.
First of all this doesn't even compare to the Fennville situation. Period.
This issue is far from being done. This district is headed in the wrong direction and the community better demand better leadership at the top because it is only going to get worse. District residents the school board meeting is Monday night (14th) and its time for the leadership to explain the actions they have been taking.
All I can say is a lot of people better be showing up to it!
Oh please! Headed in the wrong direction? How? A coach decided to hang it up on his OWN! He stated that he was unhappy last year already. Give the guy a break he is worn out and needs a break I can only imagine with having kids how hard it is to do it all. Rumor has it his assistant coaches are gonna fill in. I think you might need to talk to someone before you go to the board meeting and make a fool of yourself.
Um he wasn't worn out or unhappy!!!! He wanted to be able to see his daughter play D1 basketball for Air Force when he wanted, and also enjoy watching his son play high school ball. Because he missed college games for his other 2 sons when they were in college! So get your facts straight before you post something!!!
I was pertaining to the football coach's resignation. The basketball issue is in the archive's.
My only point was this issue is done & over with. What happened can not be changed. YOU can only LEARN from it & make sure it does not happen again no matter who is right or who is wrong.
This best suggestion on the whole issue has been go to the School Board meeting. Better yet asked to be on the agenda & ask for the facts- get both sides of the story. Then handle it in a civil manner. The truth of the matter is the people, parents, community members, i.e tax payers should be attending all of the meetings. This includes the Village of Ubly, the Townships in which you belong to meetings even when things are good not just when you have issues.
They should not be handled here on a blog hiding behind "anonymous" and critizing people, kids, or those who volunteer their time to serve the community. If you are so unhappy with the way things are done. Then get out & get elected/hired/volunteer to any of these postions.
Ubly is a better class of people then what I have read on here. I guess that is why I never get onto blogs. I was only looking for some scores & thoughts on how the teams played. Did not know I was going to find all dirty laundry.
Also, nice to see the coach exhibited class by putting him into the game as the first sub. Way to support the school staff!
Flash Games!
