Laker ace inks with Hesston

HESSTON, Kan. – Hesston College softball coach Andrew Sharp has announced Erin Albrecht, a pitcher/utility player from Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port High School, is the newest addition to the Hesston program.
Albrecht was a first-team all-conference, all-region and honorable mention all-state performer during her junior year in which she posted a 29-5 record with 301 strikeouts and a 1.28 earned run average. The right-hander also hit .316 for the Lakers with 10 doubles and three triples, helping her team to its first district title in 23 years.
This season, Albrecht has continued her fine pitching prowess, helping the Lakers gear for next weekend’s district competition.
A talented student, Albrecht is a Hesston College dean’s scholarship recipient. The head video editor during her senior year at EPBP, Albrecht will begin work toward a broadcasting/cinematic arts degree.
Albrecht is a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church in Pigeon and is active in the youth group there.
“This is a great addition to the Hesston program for so many reasons,” Sharp said. “Erin will inject a tremendous amount of talent on the field and on campus. As a legacy student, I couldn’t be happier that she chose to start at Hesston College. Erin is a big piece of the puzzle for our team, and I look forward to watching her work.”
Albrecht is the daughter of Barry and Cheryl Albrecht of Sebewaing. They are both former Hesston College student athletes.
In softball, Hesston College competes in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Located 30 miles north of Wichita, Hesston College is the two-year liberal arts college of Mennonite Church USA.

Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port hurler Erin Albrecht winds and fires in a game earlier
this season.

D'ville's Ross wins Male Athlete of the Meet

Bogan filed this report from the Meet of Champions

BAD AXE — Cody Ross missed several football games this past fall after suffering a broken leg during the middle part of the regular season.
But after a few months of rehabilitation, the Deckerville senior is fully recovered, showing off the speed which he hopes will carry him to a fine college football career.
Before that, though, Ross has a few things to take care of on the track. Here Tuesday afternoon at the Huron Daily Tribune’s 39th annual Meet of Champions, Ross checked off one of his senior goals by earning Male Athlete of the Meet honors.
Ross won the 100, 200, and was part of the winning 400 relay squad. He also ran the anchor of the third-place 800 relay team to garner the award, which is heavily pointed on maximum participation and individual events.
“It was really my goal to get Athlete of the Meet,” said Ross, who will be attending and playing football at Northwood University. “For my leg, it took about six weeks to heal up, but I feel right now that I am 100 percent. To rehab, I jogged, I lifted a little bit... I feel pretty good.”
Ross outlasted Ubly’s Joe LaFave in both the 100 (12.07) and 200 (24.28). In fact, he had to make up a couple of yards in the final few seconds to nose out LaFave in the 200.
“It was tough recovering for the 200,” Ross said. “I had to run the 800 relay and then after that I only had the break for the mile, then I had the 400 relay. So it was pretty tough.”
Ross knew he had to fend off a couple of competitors for the award, including Unionville-Sebewaing Area’s duo of Tim Canfield and Chris Harper.
Harper took home top honors in the 800 (2:08.17), and teamed with Canfield, Hayden Ewald and Jacob Wiergowski to win the 1,600 relay (3:44.68), and with Ewald, Joey Southgate and Seth Squires to win the 3,200 relay (8:45.90). But Harper did not compete as scheduled in the 400, won by Cass City’s Adrian Hartsell (53.41).
Canfield, meanwhile, was unsuccessful at his attempt to defend his title in the pole vault. He also was unable to place in the 200 — an event he came into as the No. 1 seed.
Ubly’s Brandon Glaza was the only other multiple individual winner, capturing the 1,600 (4:49.22) and 3,200 (10:35.81).
Other running event winners included Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port’s Nick Gordon in the 110 hurdles (16.78) and Deckerville’s Keenan Swann in the 300 hurdles (43.95).
In the field events, USA’s Dakota Gangler won the shot put (47-2), USA’s Michael Bednarski won the discus (144-4), Ubly’s LaFave won the long jump (18-3 1/4), Harbor Beach’s Aaron Ginther won the high jump (5-10) and Bad Axe’s Inaki Pereira claimed the pole vault (10-0).
Cass City’s foursome of Garrett Ferguson, Josh Jensen, Braeden Perzanowski and Alex Williams captured the 800 relay (1:39.30).
As for Ross, he’s gearing for the final few weeks of the track season, including  appearances at Thursday’s Sanilac County Invitational and next week’s Caro Meet of Champions. He’s also qualified with his teammates for the Division 4 state finals in the 400 relay.
And while he’s taking those events seriously, he’s also looking forward to taking part in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association’s All-Star Game later in the summer in Mount Pleasant. He’s slated to see action at fullback for the East squad.
“I am just really focusing on football,” he said.

CC's Bennett wins Female Athlete of the Meet

Adams filed this report from the Meet of Champions

BAD AXE — A year ago, Alyssa Bennett was running junior high track.
Back then, she was unsure of what events she wanted to participate in.
Fast forward to this past fall and the cross country season. There, Bennett excelled by winning nearly every race she entered and just missing All-State honors in Division 3.
After the successful cross country season, it was a given that the talented freshman would win plenty of races in the track season.
“When I was in middle school, it was all about the smaller runs,” said Bennett. “But then I did cross country, and I figured I was good at distance.”
Tuesday, at the 39th Annual Huron Daily Tribune Meet of Champions, Bennett ran a grueling schedule only a few dare to attempt — and it helped her capture Female Athlete of the Meet honors.
Her day started by running the anchor leg of the 3,200 relay that placed second.
She then stretched her legs, easily completing four laps to win the 1,600 (5:34.12).
After a brief rest, the 800 was next. She won by more than 10 seconds with a season-best time of 2:27.57.
Her final event was the toughest, eight laps in the 3,200. She was tired, but the outcome of the race was never in doubt as she turned in a time of 12:09.15.
Bennett’s schedule was nothing new as she was asked to do it in nearly every meet this season by her coach Amy Cuthrell.
“She raced four miles every single meet and never once complained. She trains like no other,” said Cuthrell. “I don’t know if I’ve ever had an athlete of her talent. I don’t know if we’re there yet. The doors are open for her to improve. She has not peaked.
“She’s a great kid and I’m so proud of her.”
Bennett was the top qualifier in the 3,200 by over 20 seconds, but due to the nature of the Huron Daily Tribune Meet of Champions, her break between the 800 and 3,200 was minimal.
“There was like just a five minute break between the 800 and the two mile,” she said. “I just said that I’m here for all the right reasons. God gave me this gift and I’m going to use it, so I just went.”
On June 4, Bennett will get her first chance to compete at the state finals where she is qualified in three events, the 3,200 relay, 1,600 and 3,200.
She thinks she can improve on her times, and is looking forward to the experience.
“I feel like I have a lot more room, but I have to work hard,” she said. “I feel like I’ve worked hard, but there’s a lot more I think I can do. If you think and you believe it, then it’s possible.”
Cuthrell spotted Bennett running track in junior high and saw her talent immediately.
The bond between the two quickly grew beyond athlete and coach.
“We’re very close, she’s like my own,” Cuthrell said. “If anybody on the team should or could complain about me being brutal and hard, it’s her. I’m hard on her.
“I want the best for Alyssa. She is very, very talented, but she’s also a bright young lady.”
Added Bennett: “She’s always there for me no matter what time of the day or night. I’ve went through a lot with Mrs. C.”
Harbor Beach’s Janelle Kirsch was the only other multiple winner of individual events. She began her day by taking the pole vault (9-0) and also placed first in the 100 hurdles (17.21). She was also third in the 300 hurdles.
Bad Axe’s Taylor Wolschlager had a fine day, winning the 200 (28.43). She was also a part of the winning 400, 800 and 1,600 relays.

Hatchet Homecoming: Walker coaches against former team

BAD AXE — From Bad Axe bat boy, to four-year varsity standout, to assistant coach, to varsity head coach.
Todd Walker’s steady climb up the baseball food chain was never in doubt, according to his former coach Wayne Turmell.
“It was pretty obvious from the start,” Turmell said. “You could see the coaching qualities in him pretty early on.”
Walker, a 1998 Bad Axe graduate, had a sort of homecoming here Friday night. He made his first trip back to the Bad Axe diamond as a head coach, taking on his mentor and the Hatchets for the first time as the varsity leader at Deckerville.
“It’s pretty special,” Walker said. “I have taken a lot of stuff as a coach from my days at Bad Axe and from Wayne... A lot of the offense we run — the bunting and the running — I took from Wayne. He’s been a great coach, and the program has been so good, for a long time.”
Walker also wears No. 26, just like Turmell.
Walker’s presence with the Bad Axe program started way back in the late 1980s. He lived close to the Bad Axe field, and his father, Ed, is a friend with Turmell.
“I started being a bat boy for Bad Axe when I was in second grade,” Walker said. “I actually remember skipping Little League practice to come and bat boy for varsity games.”
Turmell remembers it, too.
“He hung around practice pretty much every chance he got,” Turmell said. “He seemed to be taking (batting practice) off of somebody all the time.”
Those years of being a bat boy quickly turned into a four-year stint as a second baseman with the Hatchets, starting with the 1995 season.
“We were not very good Todd’s freshman year,” Turmell recalls. “In fact, we were 7-16 — we were awful.”
Despite the shaky start to his varsity career, Turmell knew it was only a matter of time before Walker turned into a leader on the field.
“He was pretty quiet his freshman year, but during the second and third years, yes, he kind of took over,” Turmell said. “He took charge. And everyone knew that was going to happen because he had been around (the program) for so long.
“To get a kid to step forward and take charge like that, it takes a special quality. And those kids aren’t always the most liked because they are vocal and they are not afraid to speak their mind. They are not afraid to say, ‘Look guys, this is how it needs to be done.’ It’s a rare quality. But it’s something good teams need.”
The Hatchets had one of their better seasons during Walker’s senior year, advancing all the way to the regional finals before losing to eventual Division 3 state runner-up Saginaw Nouvel.
After his high school career, it didn’t take long for Walker to get the coaching itch. He started as a junior varsity coach at Bad Axe before moving south to Deckerville. With the Eagles, he was the JV head coach and varsity assistant before taking over head varsity duties this spring.
Despite enduring several injuries this season, the Eagles have a chance to grab the North Central Thumb League’s South Division championship later this month. The Eagles are 10-4 in league play with four games left to play.
“We have had lots of injuries this season, but we have a pretty good group,” Walker said. “The best I have it figured is that if we win out we will at least get a tie for the league title.”
Walker credits former head coach Steve Noble for turning Deckerville’s baseball program around. The Eagles struggled for a long time on the diamond before Noble came in a few years ago and brought the program back to respectability.
“He did so much for this program,” Walker said. “I have taken a lot of stuff from Steve, too.”
Turmell said he’s had a few other former players who have become involved in coaching high school and college baseball, but this is the first time he’s had one make a visit back to their old diamond as a head coach.
“I think it’s a pretty neat thing,” he said.
While this is Walker’s first season as head coach, Turmell has been the leader at Bad Axe since 1982.
Walker isn’t so sure he’s going to stick around that long.
“I have really enjoyed doing this so far this season, but I don’t know if it’s going to be a 30-year thing like Wayne,” Walker said. “But we will see what happens.”
Turmell has some sound advice for his former player if he wants to stick around on the bench that long.
“You better marry somebody who likes to hang around a baseball diamond,” Turmell joked.
Ironically, Walker is set to get married later this summer to Chelsea Szymanski, who was on-hand for Walker’s homecoming.
“But I am not sure if baseball is up her alley,” he said. “We’ll see, I guess.”

Todd Walker and Wayne Turmell stand at home plate before Friday’s game between the Hatchets and Eagles. Walker played for Turmell for four years, and is now head coach at Deckerville.
